Definition

Social Bookmarking sites allow you to organize, store and share all your links to articles and resources.

Examples

Del.icio.us
One of the best tools because it adds a link on your web browser that when clicked quickly adds information when you read a new article. It also has code that quickly creates a tagcloud on a blog.

Active Learning list has 700+ links organized into 8 major categories and 189 sub categories
Tagcloud on a blog

Diigo
Diigo has more social networking functions than Del.ic.ious. It has more of a community feel with the possibility to share bookmarks to groups, which have their own discussion forums. There is a medical education group on Diigo.
Portaportal
A more attractive layout for a small numbers of links that you might want to share with students.
Connotea
Advertised as a tool for researchers, clinicians and scientists. It has a toolbar link similar to Del.icio.us.

Google Alerts isn't really a social bookmarker. When people wonder why I have so many active learning articles, its because I recieve regular updates from Google about the latest articles posted using an active learning tag.

Blogs are used in two ways:

Reflective writing
- Because blogs are organized like journals by date, they can provide students with an online tool for reflecting on how they have changed over time
- Shared blogs encourage group reflection, peer comments, encouragement during difficult time
- Blogs can be a record of the student's experience in the community
Sharing information
- Faculty can use blogs to present cases to students at a distance, students can us the comment function to respond
- Students can use blogs to share information with peers
- Newsletters can be created by the home school, students or faculty to share the latest news and maintain contact while in different communities

Online communication tools allow people to talk (live audio/video), some of the best include a whiteboard tool that allow people to share ideas in real time and some include PowerPoint.

Live voice, polling, whiteboard, powerpoint, video, chat at low bandwidths. Free V-rooms.
Skype
Like an online telephone caller with voice, video and chat
TokBox
A free video chat tool
Adobe Connect
Formally Macromedia Breeze, this learning management system requires high bandwidth, but has similar tools to Elluminate at a lower cost.

Web2.0 and Distributed Medical Education

Definition of Web2.0

Web2.0 is the trend of using the World Wide Web as an interactive tool instead of just an information repository. Simply put, the audience gets to answer back.

Why is Interactivity Important?

Students learn more in shorter periods of time if their minds and/or bodies are engaged in the learning process. Passively listening or reading is the least effective way to learn but is the traditional way to use websites.

Web2.0 and Distributed Medical Education

Web2.0 allows interaction between students, faculty and staff who are scattered throughout a province, a country or internationally. Depending on the tools used, interaction can be primarily social, learning focused, project-based or committee-based.

Faculty Appointments

In Saskatchewan, physicians who teach in the community are appointed as part time faculty and are called Community Based Faculty. We are thinking about changing the name to something like Clinical Teaching ... What are other peoples experience with faculty appointments?

Financial Incentives
At the University of Saskatchewan, we are exploring paying more to preceptors who have completed our clinical teaching course. Has anyone else tried this type of approach?

Intrinsic Rewards

The NOSM model

The mayors of Thunder Bay, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie advocated for a northern medical school that would promote rural and remote primary care. During the bus trip, the mayors of Wawa and Sault Ste Marie bought our meals and the chief of M’Chigeeng (Manitoulin Island) welcomed us to the culture centre presentations. The communities spoke with great pride about what they had to offer students and physicians who came to their clinics.
